The first registrations were enabled in September 2006, and the notion behind this domain extension is that all websites that use it have to comply with special terms. In other words, all .MOBI websites must be built to be viewed properly by mobile devices in accordance with the so-called “MWI Best Practices for mobile content” drawn by the W3C Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) in partnership with the dot MOBI Registry organization. The rules have induced some questions in view of the fact that the generic top-level extension is the only one that specifies what devices need to be able to open a website and the way in which this has to happen, breaking the so-called principles of device independence, according to which a web page should be created in such a way as to be opened by most web browser applications and devices, be they mobile or stationary.
